After reviewing thousands of IELTS Reading attempts, some mistakes come up again and again. Here are the five most common ones — and how to fix them.
Mistake 1: Reading the whole passage word by word first. Many students read the entire passage carefully before even looking at the questions. This wastes valuable time. Instead, skim the passage quickly, then go straight to the questions and scan for specific answers as needed.
Mistake 2: Ignoring the word limit instructions. Fill-in-the-blank questions often say "NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS" or "ONE WORD ONLY." Writing three words when the limit is two makes your answer automatically wrong, even if the meaning is correct. Always check the instruction before you start that section.
Mistake 3: Copying answers with the wrong spelling or grammar. Your answer usually must be copied exactly as it appears in the passage — correct spelling and grammar included. A single misspelled word ("recieve" instead of "receive") can cost you the mark. Always double check your spelling against the passage.
Mistake 4: Confusing "similar meaning" with "correct meaning." In multiple choice or matching questions, one wrong option is often designed to sound similar to the correct answer but change its actual meaning. Read all options carefully and compare them precisely to what the passage says, rather than choosing the first option that "sounds right."
Mistake 5: Not managing time across all three passages. Some students spend too long on Passage 1 because it feels easy, leaving too little time for Passage 3. Track your time passage by passage during practice, not just for the whole test, so you build a realistic sense of pacing.
How to fix these mistakes. The best way to correct these habits is consistent practice with instant feedback. After every passage on Readlify, review the explanation for each question — right or wrong — so you understand exactly why an answer is correct. Over time, these common traps become easy to spot.
