How to Approach Passage 3, the Hardest Section

Passage 3 in the IELTS Academic Reading test is almost always the most difficult — denser vocabulary, more abstract ideas, and longer sentences than Passages 1 and 2. Here is how to handle it without losing confidence or time.

Do not panic when it feels harder. Passage 3 is deliberately written to be more academic and abstract. This is normal and expected — every test-taker faces the same difficulty, not just you. Going in expecting it to be harder helps you stay calm instead of assuming something is wrong with your understanding.

Save enough time for it. If you have spent too long on Passages 1 and 2, you may rush Passage 3 and make avoidable mistakes. Aim to reach Passage 3 with at least 20 minutes left, even if that means answering a couple of Passage 1 questions with your best guess instead of perfect certainty.

Expect more Not Given and inference-based questions. Passage 3 often uses more True/False/Not Given and Matching questions that require understanding implied meaning, not just locating exact words. Read surrounding sentences carefully rather than looking for one exact phrase.

Do not let one hard paragraph stop you. If a particular paragraph feels confusing, do not reread it five times before moving on. Answer the questions you can from the sections you do understand, then return to the difficult paragraph if time allows.

Practice specifically with hard passages. Improvement on Passage 3 comes from exposure to genuinely difficult academic writing, not shortcuts. Regularly practicing Advance-level passages on Readlify builds the stamina and vocabulary needed to handle Passage 3 comfortably on exam day.
