Why IELTS uses paraphrasing. If questions used the exact same words as the passage, you could answer correctly just by matching text, without actually understanding the meaning. Paraphrasing forces you to demonstrate real comprehension, which is exactly what the test is designed to measure.
Common paraphrasing patterns to recognize. - Synonyms: "increase" in the question may appear as "rise," "grow," or "climb" in the passage. - Different word forms: "decision" in the question might appear as "decide" or "decisive" in the passage. - Restructured sentences: "Scientists discovered X causes Y" might appear in the passage as "Y has been linked to X by researchers." - General-to-specific shifts: a question might use a broad term like "animals" for something the passage specifically calls "mammals" or "primates."
How to train this skill. When you review a passage after practicing, specifically look at how each question's key phrase was expressed differently in the passage. Over time, you will start to notice common substitution patterns — for instance, "important" is frequently paraphrased as "significant," "crucial," or "vital."
Build a personal synonym list. Keep a running list of paraphrase pairs you encounter, such as "cause → lead to, result in, trigger." Reviewing this list regularly trains your brain to instantly recognize these connections during the actual test, saving valuable time.
